It’s a huge (million acre) spectacular wilderness along the Minnesota-Canadian border that contains more than 1,500 miles of pristine, rugged, glacial-carved canoe waters. To canoests and backpackers, it doesn’t need more than an acronym: BWCA. There are some more than 2,200 backcountry campsites, the overwhelming number of which can only be reached by water. As the glaciers retreated (beginning about 14,000 years ago), they left behind huge depressions which became Niagra Falls, the Great Lakes and, of course, what we call the BWCA these days.
